Formation Tablet (Part 1)
The floor and ceiling of Adva was covered in brilliant glimmers of pallor light. Unlike the third hexagram’s pitch-black curtain draped over the sky, there was no feeling of restriction. Of course, it was also an illusion formation.
Standing in the hall and chattering amongst each other were around fifty to sixty Heaven Stage Realm disciples. They were debating the chances of Luo Feilong and Ji Wenkai, who were getting confrontational with each other again, becoming the first Greater Heaven Stage Disciple following the exam.
An elder glided across the starry sky approximately fifteen minutes later. He wore a dark-green robe, brandished a yin yang symbol on his chest as Greater Heaven Stage formation casters did, yet his yin yang symbol had an imbued formation, thereby explaining the rotation. He was a man who emphasised the importance of a prim appearance.
The disciples bowed. “Greetings, Greater Heaven Stage Caster Lu!”
Greater Heaven Stage Caster Lu, Lu Deyi, scanned the disciples present and gave Luo Feilong as well as Ji Wenkai a nod of approval. “You two have improved your grasp on formations again. Good!”
“You flatter me. I do my best to improve myself to better serve the sect,” claimed Luo Feilong.
“Thank you for the praise, Greater Heaven Caster Lu. I learnt a lot thanks to the pointers you kindly imparted last time. I promise to defeat Talisman Sect this year for our sect’s glory!” Ji Wenkai pledged.
“As you two are taking the exam again, I shall summon the formation tablet. Do your best.”
Greater Heaven Caster Lu summoned three quaint formation tablets from his sleeve and enlarged them to the size of doors them in the sky. The edges gave the impression they were on the verge of breaking and weren’t even. The white energy flitting across the patterns on their surfaces indicated formations were cast onto them. Stare at them for extensive periods, and one would’ve suffocated until they passed out for several days straight.
If a formation tablet broke, a test was successfully completed. Once all three broke, it meant that one examinee successfully climbed to Greater Heaven Stage.
“You two know the drill. You two may commence,” Greater Heaven Stage Caster Lu announced and stepped aside.
“Senior Brother Luo, would you like to have a shot first?” Ji Wenkai asked with a propitious salute.
“Hmph, I suppose I shall.”
Luo Feilong, standing in front of a formation tablet, shut his eyes and adjusted his breathing. Nobody wanted to blink. His supporters prayed in silence for his success on this twenty-fourth attempt. For him, personally speaking, he had figured out the cornerstone to the formation tablet and believed he was destined for success on this attempt. Opening his eyes again, he readily placed his right hand onto the formation tablet.
The formation tablet’s formation activated, swirling around Luo Feilong. Judging from his perspiration and shaking, he was fighting hard against something. Funnily enough, the audience looked tenser than he was – minus Ji Wenkai and his fake smile. The pressure on Ji Wenkai would’ve doubled if Luo Feilong successfully broke the first formation tablet, after all.
The formation glowed brighter and intensified with each passing minute. Luo Feilong, face pallor and the bleeding from his mouth, eventually reached a dangerous point, forcing him to pull his hand away. He bent over and panted as if he had severe oxygen debt. Lu Deyi wore his disappointment on his face as if he expected the failure, but he genuinely prayed for Luo Feilong’s success.
While Luo Feilong’s cronies consoled him, Ji Wenkai’s wrinkles smoothed out.
“Ji Wenkai, do you want to try?” Lu Deyi queried.
“Yes, I wish to test my new knowledge.”
Ji Wenkai flashed a quick smirk Luo Feilong’s way, peppering the latter’s disappointment with concern. Ji Wenkai then walked up to the formation tablet and followed the exact procedure Luo Feilong did. Ji Wenkai’s face was pale as soon as the formation activated, but tinges of pink began to surface, exciting his cohorts.
“Dream on. I say he’s going to fail.”
“Exactly, Senior Brother Luo failed. Who’s he?”
“Silence! If your distractions impact him, the lot of you will be in for it!” Lu Deyi chewed out Luo Feilong’s boys.
As the formation intensified, the red on Ji Wenkai’s face spread. The intensity surpassed what Luo Feilong went through. Eventually, the white energy burst, obstructing vision. Ji Wenkai’s cohorts were elated, albeit not sure if he succeeded. As long as Ji Wenkai broke the first formation tablet, he could’ve rode the momentum and had an easier time with the next ones.
