Chapter 24
Chrissy, Edna and Arwen were at the guild looking up jobs on the board. There were a few things they were thinking about, but Roy was constantly on their mind. No matter how charming they were and no matter how much they bumped into him, he simply refused to make a move or turn their way.
All the other male adventurers by contrast were easy. If they could just have Roy’s child the rest of their lives would be easy. Sitting there they sighed.
Arwen: “Edna, why did you quit as well? Guild Master was upset at us but you could have stayed as a maid.”
Edna: “No way! I can’t stay there! You think I would want to stay after Dhalia had her eyes on me? She saw through my plan… as expected of the Guild Master.”
Chrissy: “I guess being adventurers is all we can do.”
Arwen: “What about Roy’s friends? Perhaps we should try and get close to them? Who where they? Hemo and Pen? They had nice weapons and armor that Roy bought for them. Maybe we can get some benefits that way?”
As she was speaking Dhalia showed up behind the three of them. Arwen instantly shut her mouth when she saw the Guild Master folding both her arms at them.
Dhalia: “Why do the three of you scheme so much? I don’t quite understand it.”
The three girls shrieked when they saw her but then composed themselves and took a quick bow.
Arwen: “I apologize for speaking out of line!”
Dhalia: “I don’t care, you’re adventurers so you’re meant to be free. In fact if you see Roy you’re more than welcome to try and win him over.”
Chrissy: “More than welcome?”
The Guild Master was stern with them last night but suddenly she changed. They didn’t quite understand. Edna quit being a poor head maid because of it.
Dhalia: “Truth is Edna, I hired you as a head maid even though you were terrible at that job because I wanted to see if I could entice him to stay here more. A human’s lifespan is short and I wanted as much of him as I could get before he passes on. As you know, Roy has other connections and the three of you are the closest to me in this city. I thought it might be good to give you an opportunity. I could sense how uncomfortable he was with the three of you around. You were all coming on far too strong when you didn’t even know what his preferences were!”
Chrissy: “Sorry! I’m sorry! It’s just… it’s just… it works on all the other adventurers.”
Dhalia laughed.
Dhalia: “I suppose it would work on them but this boy is my son and he also grew up being taken care of by Xeneva. Even though I am being boastful, there are very few women as beautiful as the two of us.”
Her statement made the other three girls a bit angry on the inside.
‘What? We’re human and you’re a vampire. Name one race humans are more beautiful than on average.’
‘Really… how are we going to compare? We get older while you stay young for centuries.’
Dhalia: “Don’t despair over that. For human women you’re considered beautiful.”
Dhalia smiled though she had seen other human women far more beautiful than they. The world worked in a strange way where the most powerful also tend to be the most beautiful. She wondered if Roy also had high standards of beauty and wouldn’t look at the three girls in front of him. While they’re not the kind of girls he wants to be with since he was a virgin, at least he should have had some attraction to them right?
Dhalia: Maybe you did ruin our son’s standards of beauty, Xeneva.
Dhalia: “Well it doesn’t matter for now. There is a secret task I have to assign to the three of you and I trust you’ll see it through. Xeneva will give you enough gold to retire, not enough to live in luxury the rest of your life but enough to retire. You can get it as a stipend each week or all at once if you complete this task successfully.”
The three girls suddenly had their ears perk up. Anything that could give stability to an adventurer was preferable. It would allow them to take only jobs that interest them and they could do the lower end jobs without worrying about their bottom line. Easy jobs for ale and alcohol were always more fun than difficult ones that took weeks or months, and with the rank downgrade coming the higher paying jobs would not be available to them as often.
Edna: “This mission, why is it so important?”
Dhalia: “It’s extremely confidential, that’s why it’s important. If you can pull it off quietly you’ll get the reward. It shouldn’t be beyond your abilities but it is important.”
Arwen: “Can we have more details.”
Dhalia: “Only what I’m going to give you, and you have to do it specifically the way I tell you. Not more not less.”
Chrissy: “I accept the conditions.”
Dhalia: “Good, then how about you two?”
Edna and Arwen both nodded towards the beautiful vampire when she asked. There was nothing else they could do otherwise and this was a job that would change their lives. Obviously there was a reason why it paid a lot, and because of that they needed to do it well.
Dhalia brought them to her office then handed them a map and a capsule.
Dhalia: “Only open the capsule if you find the target, you’ll know you found it when the capsule glows. Once you have found the target, bring it back in the most quiet way possible.”
Edna: “We understand, we will set off now.”
Dhalia: “Good.”
The three girls left and went out. Another worker at the guild came up to the office to find Dhalia after. It was a man, a generic looking man who would not be important to the story in any way later.
Dhalia: “Do you have something to report?”
Generic Man: “Guild Master, there are two men down stairs who claim to be friends of your son Roy. They are demanding to rank up because they want to be able to take on higher ranked missions. They are telling us they will talk to Roy who will the come to you to get the staff in trouble if we don’t give them such a promotion.”
Dhalia took a breath. She did not want to see her son get upset but at the same time she was not sure how to handle this. She didn’t grow up in the village.
Dhalia: “What gives them the gall to demand such a thing from us?”
Generic Man: “They have expensive equipment bought for them by Roy, and they claim that because he was willing to give them each 25 gold coins they must be very important to him.”
Dhalia thought about it some more. There was one more task she needed to do later but she felt the need to take care of this now.
Dhalia: “Settle them in a nice room and tell them the Guild Master is deciding what to do and I will send you a message later.”
There was so much to do today and Dhalia knew she had to keep going.
Generic Man: “Very well Guild Master.”
Dhalia teleported back home and Roy was in the middle of relieving himself when she appeared next to him. A large brown solid piece was in the process of coming out of his body.
Roy: “AHHH!”
Dhalia: “It’s fine Darling, I’ve already seen everything after I gave birth to you.”
